Connie Oi-Yan Wong
Unlike any other pianists’ musical journeys, Connie has experienced an extraordinary trajectory in her musical career as a pianist and music educator. Due to her congenital deficiency, Connie was born with only three full fingers and had undergone a series of orthopedic surgeries to correct her fingers’ disfigurement throughout her childhood. It was only after she finished all the surgeries, at the age of 13, that Connie began her piano studies. Her passion for playing piano grew even stronger that gradually led Connie pursue her music dream in college years. Connie graduated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in music, majoring in piano performance. Then she earned her M.A. and Ph.D in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2006. Over her student years in the States, as a piano and keyboard player, Connie toured extensively with a music ministry in Southeast Asian countries, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US.
Connie’s inspiring story has been extensively reported by different media. She was interviewed and profiled on TVB’s “Sunday Report” in Hong Kong in August 2007. In addition, she has been profiled in numerous local and overseas newspapers, Christian TV programs and radio shows. As a keynote speaker and motivational speaker, Connie has been invited to share her encouraging story in schools, universities, churches and charity organizations. She also speaks at several well-known banking and insurance companies.
In 2008, she was invited to perform at the 2008 Olympic and Paralymic Equestrian Event, “Give Up Get Up” Nick Vujicic Conference, and was interviewed on RTHK’s “Music and Beyond.” In 2010, Connie was honored to be one of the “Top Outstanding Young Persons” of Hong Kong.
